Elevate

21-Feb-08

Morgan Page is set to drop his debut album, Elevate, on March 25th. Known best in the underground remix world for his bootleg Cease & Desist album, Morgan has gone legit to release a collection of official remixes and original material in cooperation with the Nettwerk music label.

The lovely folks at Nettwerk are making a preview of the first single, “The Longest Road,” available as a stream. Give these links a try if you want to hear it:

Here’s what Morgan has to say about each of the tracks on Elevate:

01) MORGAN PAGE FEAT. LISSIE - ‘THE LONGEST ROAD’
House music meets Nashville. This song features Lissie - one of the most exciting new singers I’ve heard in years. This song is all about fusing organic folk influences with the edge and energy of electronic music.

02) MORGAN PAGE FEAT. TYLER JAMES - ‘CALL MY NAME’
A bit of Royksopp with a dance-rock edge. Tyler James radiates a bit of a Chris Martin-esque vibe He’s got such a cool presence to his voice - it fit the track perfectly. I heard him play at Hotel Cafe in Hollywood and immediately said - let’s get this guy in the studio!

03) THE SUBMARINES - ‘PEACE AND HATE’ (MORGAN PAGE REMIX)
A dark yet hopeful remix. I wanted to give this song a bit of extra drama. It’s got an eerie feel to it, and then it goes all happy at the end.

04) MORGAN PAGE FEAT. MATT WASLEY - ‘FADE AWAY’
A breaky, rock influenced song with a pop edge and some epic moments.

05) JENNY OWEN YOUNGS - ‘F**K WAS I’ (MORGAN PAGE REMIX)
Dirty words, strings, and atmospheric guitars - this is a quirky and introspective take on the original.

06) LEIGH NASH - ‘NERVOUS IN THE LIGHT OF DAWN’ (MORGAN PAGE REMIX)
Leigh Nash’s love song gets the bleepy electro treatment with some guitars and heavy delays.

07) BITTER:SWEET - ‘DIRTY LAUNDRY’ (MORGAN PAGE REMIX)
Seductive vocals are punctuated by an addictive electro-line. My favorite part is the sliced up vocal hook and the big nasty breakdown.

08) NELLY FURTADO - ‘MANEATER’ (DAVID GARCIA & MORGAN PAGE REMIX)
A straight up take-no-prisoners, pumping, dirty club mix.

09) DELERIUM - ‘ANGELICUS’ (MORGAN PAGE REMIX)
Operatic vocals meet progressive electro-house. Note the contrast of the rolling synthetic textures contrasted with the guitars.

10) MORGAN PAGE FEAT. CAMILA GREY - ‘ONE DAY’
This one’s got a bit of a breaks vibe complemented nicely by Camila’s sexy ethereal vox.

11) DENGUE FEVER - ‘SLEEPWALKING THROUGH THE MEKONG’ (MORGAN PAGE REMIX)
Cambodian rock outfit Dengue Fever gets a Massive Attack styled makeover with a crunchy Wurlitzer bassline and chromatic percussion. Many people have described this as evoking the feeling of “flying over a landscape.”

12) UNDER - ‘UNDER’ (MORGAN PAGE REMIX)
The perfect end to a late night. I wanted to make this mix really dramatic and moody, while keeping the seductive quality in tact. It’s all about the big drop-out near the end. A great come-down track after a night of debauchery.

Morgan is a solid producer and his work has never disappointed me. I’ve always respected his DIY ethic; he really sets a great example for all amateur remixers out there to strive towards. Keep your eye on this amazing producer — he’s going places!

Just Can’t Get You Off My Mind

05-Feb-08

outofmymind_2.jpg

It’s been a while, dear readers. Let’s make up for some lost time.

This latest mashup really could have been the soundtrack to my teenage years. Both bands heavily influenced not only my fashion at the time (think safety pins, dyed black hair and trench coats) but also helped to cultivate my keen taste for “synthpop” music. I was what some would call a P.I.B. — a “person in black.”

If this all sounds very romantic and nostalgic, you might be right. I have a lot of great memories associated with both these songs. I hope this mashup does them both justice.

Depeche Mode (”Just Can’t Get Enough”) vs. Pet Shop Boys (”Always On My Mind”)
Just Can’t Get You Off My Mind (DJ Matt Hite Mashup)
G Major, 127 BPM

This one is dedicated to Tracker. I hope we meet again on the other side.

PS. The beautiful cover is by Simon Iddol. Thanks, Simon!

Nine Inch Noels

20-Dec-07

A new Christmas classic as far as I’m concerned.

It Is To Laff

11-Dec-07

Rule #1 of mashups — don’t take it seriously. The creators of It Is To Laff certainly aren’t. A bit disposable, but certainly good for laughs — my favorites were Get Ur Typewriter On and Turd Night.

Yes, it’s weird. It’s supposed to be.

Catching Up With The Kleptones

10-Dec-07

If you love The Kleptones as much as I do, then you’ll definitely want to grab their latest offering. Appropriately titled Live’r Than You’ll Ever Be, it’s a recording of their performance at Bestival in the Isle Of Wight. Recommended — check it out.

I Did The Sisters Wrong

09-Dec-07

ididthesisterswrong_sslogo.jpg

You might say I’m on a roll! I don’t think I’ve ever released so many mashups in such a short time frame. What’s up with that?

This latest mashup is composed of the Scissor Sisters’ “Lights” instrumental along with vocals from Mims’ “I Did You Wrong,” the Beatles’ “Come Together,” and Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick in the Wall.” The Lights track has a great disco feel to it and the horns in it make for a great call-and-response interaction with the Mims’ vocals. The real pay-off comes at the end when the Beatles and Pink Floyd join in during the final chorus, though. Pure dance floor fun — a “fckngdiscobomb” as my friend Simon puts it!

What’s exciting about this mashup for me, though, is that the #1 Scissor Sisters’ fan site — www.idontfeellikedancin.com — is premiering the track. So, yes, if you want to grab a copy of this track, head over to the fan site to grab it. It’s worth it, I promise!

PS. The twisted cover art is by Simon Iddol. Thanks, Simon!

You Don’t Know Unk

03-Dec-07

youdontknowunk.jpg

New mashup for the hip-hop heads out there. It’s definitely not my “typical” 80’s inspired mix, that’s for sure. More of a lean-back, bounce, and nod your head type track. Would love to hear what you think.

DJ Unk (Walk It Out) vs. Eminem ft. 50 Cent, Cashis, & Lloyd Banks (You Don’t Know) vs. Oingo Boingo (Dead Man’s Party) vs. Beastie Boys (Brass Monkey) vs. Matt Hite (synths)

You Don’t Know Unk (Dirty)
You Don’t Know Unk (Clean)

PS. The clean version just has the dirty and/or offensive words muted.

PPS. Simon Iddol was inspired to create a great cover for the mashup! Thanks, Simon. Check out his other designs.
