That’s Just Not What I Needed

I’ve been fiddling with this one for far too long. DJ Adrian gave it a test spin at last month’s Bootie and it went over huge. It’s had a few more tweaks and twiddles since then — hopefully for the better!

This one’s short and sweet. The vocal pairing of Ric Ocasek’s Just What I Needed over the instrumentation of The Ting Tings’ That’s Not My Name sounds surprisingly natural. If you’re a child of the 80s, you’ll like this one.

Don’t hesitate to leave a comment. I truly appreciate them. Thanks!

Update 7/14/2008: Simon made an awesome cover for me! Thanks, Simon.

  1. This is excellent! I was only recently introduced to The Ting Tings, and am still undecided about them, but I love “Just What I Needed,” and this is a very well-executed mashup.

It’s been a while since we had new material from you, and this proves it was worth the wait. Excellent job! Now the wait beings for the next piece…

    Great job!

One minor correction: the vocal on Just What I Needed was done by Ben Orr (the Cars’ bassist). He also sang Drive, Let’s Go, etc. While Ric wrote the song, it was Ben doing the singing on your mash up!

Hey you should re-host the “Scrub the P.A.” MP3 because I used to have it and the MP3 link doesn’t work. I remember it was a great mash-up so could you please do something about this?

  11. Matt! Great track! I discovered your work back in 2005-2006 and lost track somehow… glad to see you’re still doing what you do. Dunno if you’ll remember this, but I sent you a demo mash of Seven Nation Army Vs Sweet Dreams and asked if you could work it … you suggested I practice with the tools and see if I could get it to work myself. Never did get that one sorted (White Stripes drummer was horrbily off beat), but I’ve done a number of other mashes since. Feel free to check out my Myspace page for a listen when you feel like it :o )
