QTFairUse6

30-Aug-06

It certainly hasn’t been a good week for DRM. Earlier this week Engadget reported that Windows Media DRM was a goner, and now they are also reporting that songs “protected” with iTunes v6 FairPlay DRM have been liberated. Read more about QTFairUse6 on this JHymn thread.

Serato Shortcut Sticker

30-Aug-06

If you’ve read my blog for any length of time, you probably already know that I’m a big fan of Rane’s Serato Scratch Live. The best online resource for the product (besides the forum) is the SSL User Wiki, a community maintained product knowledge base. One of my favorite gems buried in this Wiki is [...]

Cocktail Party Problem Solved

30-Aug-06

Are better vocal and instrument isolation techniques on the way? Math professors from the University of Missouri-Columbia claim to have solved the “cocktail party” problem, an auditory source separation problem that the brain has little trouble handling but is very difficult to perform with digital signal processing technology. In the past, researchers were able to separate voices but not reproduce [...]

Spiralfrog

29-Aug-06

According to BBC News, Vivendi Universal has agreed to make its entire catalogue available on the yet-to-be-launched ”free” Spiralfrog music service. Momma always told me that there’s no such thing as a free lunch, and in the case of Spiralfrog, you’ll need to endure advertisements in exchange for the “free” music. No specific details of how intrusive [...]

FairUse4WM

Windows Media DRM broken? Yes, it’s true — at least for version 10 and 11 (aka PlaysForSure). Quick, sign up for an all-you-can eat Napster account and get downloading! Various links and mirrors for downloading the tool can be found in this Doom9 forum thread. (via Engadget)

"Minority Report" Multitouch Sensor

26-Aug-06

I’ve seen the Lemur from Jazzmutant, but this new multitouch sensor video demonstration is absolutely amazing. I wouldn’t mind using it as a DJ control surface!

Ramdom Thoughts Podcast

16-Aug-06

I recently discovered Ramdom Thoughts, an excellent podcast dedicated to mash-up music and underground remixes. It seems as though there aren’t that many mash-up oriented podcasts out there — I’d love to hear what other readers have come across. Drop me a line or post in the comments if you have any recommendations.

Hey DJ, F##@$@#ck You!

16-Aug-06

Everyone’s a DJ these days, right? Amy Kellner over at Viceland takes some serious jabs at the DJ profession, calling it the “biggest fucking bullshit con of all time.” It’s obviously a humor piece — a real good laugh — so don’t get too bent out of shape.

10 Greatest Beat Making Videos

16-Aug-06

Music Thing’s recent list of top 10 beat making videos is sure to inspire a Beatmixed reader or two out there. I especially like the Pete Rock one. Lots of good DJ-oriented YouTube finds on this list, that’s for sure!

Bootie Turns 3

10-Aug-06

Aaaargh! Shiver me timbers, it’s finally here — the Bootie 3-Year Anniversary Pirate Ball! This Friday, August 11th, 2006, Bootie will host nine of the bay area’s best mash-up DJs in two rooms. Get your bootleg on with DJs Party Ben, Mysterious D, John, Jay-R, Dada, Earworm, Tripp, Adrian, and Matt Hite (me!). Other treats [...]
