Mixed In Key

mixedinkey.gif

If you’re into harmonic mixing — and you should be if you don’t want to make ears bleed when people hear your work — then check out this handy key detection utility, MixedInKey. It’s basically a souped up ToNaRt, but with the ability to scan multiple MP3 files and write the key to an ID3 tag. I personally think it’s a bit on the pricey side, although to be fair, I haven’t had a chance to check out the full version so I’m not a good judge of value or usefulness. If anyone has had a chance to use the full product, I’d be interested in hearing whether or not you think it’s worth the $58.

I’ve used it quite a bit–I agree, it’s slightly overpriced, but I bought it and I’m glad I did. It’s a time-saver and is the best thing I’ve found so far…

I think this program completely copies Rapid Evolution (www.mixshare.com), which has been around much longer and has much more functionality, plus, it has more accurate key detection! If you like Mixed in Key, go straight to the source and check out Rapid Evolution (free!).

Rapid Evolution is the ugliest piece of software you’ve ever seen.

At least MIK has a cool interface, and that’s even without an OSX verion out yet :)

rapid evolution has a skinnable user interface, if you want you can create your own skin and make it look exactly like mixed in key. i wonder if you checked out the other skins before saying that. it’s also free, and will be open source, so you won’t be shelling out cash for an inferior product. if you check key comparisons, you’d see mixed in key does the worst at detecting the actual key of songs.. http://www.mixingonbeat.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=2268

It’s true Rapid Evolution isn’t the nicest Win32 program in terms of looks + speed, even if it’s skinnable it’s still using the JRE… but at the end of the day who cares? It’s free, it’s the most accurate, it’ll do camelot notation, and realistically this is the kind of program that’s incredibly useful but you’re only going to be running it once or twice here and there to update your tune collection – it’s not like it’s Outlook, always running in the background.

you guys are right…who the fcuk really cares about how it looks?
what are you going to be bringing it to a gig and displaying it for the crowd to see?
    get real buddy.
the ONLY important factors are it’s accuracy and price.
i just found out about mixedinkey and was almost about to buy it but tried finding it free on the net. didn’t happen…even with p2p but if rapid evolution is better i’ll just use that intead!
the $58US i save can buy me more music or something.

I use mixed in key a fair bit, the new version seems to be pretty good, often it corresponds with rapid evolution detections. Its faster and easier to use than rapid evolution. I thought $58US was a small price to pay for how much MIK improved my mixing.

  9. What they dont tell you is how you are actually buying software as a service for $58.
The software refuses to work without connecting to their server presumably to send back key detection data to improve their algorhythms. One thing that is incredibly annoying is that you simply cant get the thing to work if their server is down like it is right now which would be tollerable for software at a reasonable price but once you have parted with almost 60 smackers ill be darned if i am going to tollerate this rubbish.
Other features it needs but doesnt have include the ability to re-rename files and strip key data out of files already analyzed as well as use the existing analysis data to merely bulk write in all the tags. All this i would expect for almost 60 bucks. I have the ability to write a dirty little program to do all this but i just dont have the time. now i have to wait around for their server to go back on line… brother!

  10. The new version 4.0 of Mixed In Key can rename files and strip key data out of files already analyzed. I’m sorry to hear that Rudi was trying to analyze files when our server was down, this is a rare occurrence. Overall we are very please with the way that this program has developed, as are most of our users. In a recent survey we conducted, 97.3% of our current users would recommend Mixed In Key to their friends.

i bought mik4 and im disapointed ,it works but you cant use it offline thats no good to me as a dj. it dosent write to the hadr drive where i store all my music so you basicly have to do it all your self.so i guess i have to find another way to do it

  15. DJ BBQ — this is unfortunately a change that was made to the product last year (I believe). It does make scanning offline impossible which is a major downer in my opinion.

Not sure what you mean when you say it “doesn’t write to the hard drive.”

This program is great. It works really well and has benefitted me. I think it is worth the money. I tried Rapid Evolution but had poor results with it. Mixed in Key has worked every time. Get it!

I Have an older copy of MIK 2.8 via a friend.
Works fine, and the end result, my mixes are certainly a major better!
So am thinking of buying the latest version.
Biggest thing holding me back tho, is that you still don’t seem to be able to read/scan .FLAC files.
Extracting them to MP3 first takes a fair bit of time.
Also the fact that you’re not able to use it offline anymore is a bummer… So MIK developers, please do change this, and I’m more them willing to pay the $58,–
