Mixxx is a digital DJ system that works on all major desktop operating system, including Windows XP, OS X, and Linux. The open source software includes features such as beat estimation, parallel visual displays, and support for DJ input controllers. It can handle MP3, Ogg Vorbis, Wave and Aiff sound formats. For controller automation, Mixxx supports MIDI and standard input devices such as joysticks and mice. It looks to be somewhat comparable to Traktor, minus the hefty price tag. I personally use Rane Serato Scratch Live — which I’m perfectly happy with — but I’m definitely interested in learning about alternatives. Have any readers out there tried Mixxx?

I used Mixxx for a while - the last version I used was 1.0 or maybe 1.1.
I actually preferred it before they moved to Version 1.0 - the interface was changed significantly. And I had a lot of problems with it crashing.
That said - I enjoyed using it - it was a cheap and free way of DJ’ing on a laptop. It was also interesting because they’ve done some work on allowing the use of control surfaces.
If you’re looking for an alternative to Traktor I would definitely suggest giving Mixxx a go - just be sure you do a lot of long sets in your bedroom first so you can be sure it won’t crash on you.
I personally use VDJ.

Mixxx does not look like a great DJ programme, but it is free. Have not tried it though.
If you want a cheap an reasonable DJ programme, you should look up AtomixMP3
http://www.atomixmp3.com
It’s open, it’s stable, it’s great.(version 1.4)
VDJ and Atomixmp3 are nice products but there is a handicap, they ‘re not free and not available for other systems than wintendo
