When Media Becomes Culture

Blogger Danah Boyd (along with various commenters) make some great arguments on the topic of mash-ups and remixes being an active consumption of culture rather than a production of culture. One commenter even compares mash-ups to folk art, going on to draw parallels between current corporate copyright control to the premodern church “monopoly on the kinds of stories that could be told about Jesus.” Worth a read for the academic-types out there.
