Way back in 2003, up-and-coming San Francisco DJs Adrian and the Mysterious D had a hard drive full of illicit MP3 mash-ups … and a dream. And with that, the two started the first club in the United States devoted solely to the then-burgeoning artform, which they christened Bootie, an abbreviation for what were then known in underground circles as “bootlegs.”
Fast-forward two quick years, and the DJ duo no longer have to explain to everyone what “mash-ups” are. Of course, with mainstream artists such as Jay-Z and Linkin Park trying to cash in on the mash-up craze, most of the country erroneously thinks a “mash-up” is simply a hip-hop artist rapping over a well-known rock song, a misconception that irks Adrian. “Mash-ups are so much more than rap rock, part 2,” he says. “Half the fun of bastard pop is bringing together artists from different genres — or even different eras — who wouldn’t even be seen in the same room together. It’s definitely something that appeals to people who like all different kinds of music.”
This is part of what has made their club Bootie such a hit over the past two years, attracting well-known mash-up DJs from around the world, including Go Home Productions (London), McSleazy (Glasgow), Zebra (Paris), Lionel Vinyl (UK), Inhumanz (Las Vegas), Instamatic (London), and Payroll (London).
The club has definitely helped put San Francisco on the map as the epicenter of the American mash-up scene, a point solidified by the wealth of homegrown talent featured on this year’s underground CD sensation, The Best Mashups In The World Ever Are From San Francisco, which just received 4/5 stars in the July 2005 issue of Remix magazine.
Many of the contributors to that CD will be spinning at Bootie’s 2-Year Anniversary Party, which will feature an all-star line-up of bootlegger DJs, including Party Ben, Earworm, Tripp, Jay-R, and Dada, along with club founders Adrian & the Mysterious D.
At 11 pm, Bootie will present a live set from Smash-Up Derby, the world’s only mash-up rock band, featuring DJ Adrian and local chanteuse Trixxie Carr, who share lead vocal duties. The band expertly melds the likes of Eurythmics with the White Stripes, and Joan Jett with Nine Inch Nails, in such a way that you’ll never hear the originals the same way again.
Throughout the night, there will also be performances from local superstar Princess Kennedy, reigning Miss Trannyshack Anna Conda, sexy pin-up girl Patty O’Furniture, and Glamamore.
And last but not least is the Bootie 2-Year Anniversary CD, which will be given to the first 500 people through the door. Featuring mash-ups inspired by the Bootie flyers from the past year, and including bootlegs from every guest DJ who’s spun at the club, it’s a 20-track sampler of the best of the current bastard pop scene.
The Bootie 2-Year Anniversary takes place Saturday, August 13, at Rickshaw Stop, 155 Fell at Van Ness, in San Francisco. Doors open at 9 pm. Cover is $10 and includes a free CD. 2 for 1 before 10:30 pm!
