Sterile burning is Sony BMG’s latest crack at CD copy protection. In a nutshell, it’s an attempt to prevent anything beyond 2nd generation (or some other predetermined number) copies of CDs. The description in the article is pretty confusing:
Under the new solution, tracks ripped and burned from a copy-protected
disc are copied to a blank CD in Microsoft’s Windows Media Audio
format. The DRM embedded on the discs bars the burned CD from being
copied.
How exactly you end up with a WMA file from the rip and what sort of consumer CD player can even play a WMA is beyond me. However the hell it works, I’m sure some smart kid will break it.
