The Charlotte Observer (use BugMeNot to skip registration) is running a short article on the evolution of the music consumer into the music producer. As James Rotondi (editor of the US version of Future Music magazine) puts it, “[c]omputers are the new garage.”
(FYI, I think the same article was also published in the New York Times.)

Yup, same article by David Carr of the NYTimes.
It seems to me that there are two things happening here:
More people will be creating content of all kinds since it’s so easy to be in many forms of media. See this post (http://createdigitalmusic.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=502&Itemid=44) on CreateDigitalMusic profiling Quantazelle, a “a talented IDM, musician/producer, creator/editor of the electronic music zine Modsquare, owner of the jewelry company Zella, founder, manager, and designer of the subvariant record label”. She is the perfect example of a new kind of renaissance woman.
In addition to those who will quit their day jobs and dive into the deep end of the new media, there will be a lot of hobbyist-types who give away the content they create, in exchange for donations perhaps. This NYTimes piece is a confirmation of that end of things.
