StartSoma is hosting Face The Music, an art exhibit of more than 450 works from LA artist Plasticfucker. Since Plasticfucker’s art is all about the appropriation of pop culture, it’s fitting that myself and Bootie DJs A + D along with Party Ben have been hired to play mash-ups throughout the evening.
The show is tomorrow — that’s Thursday, May 26th, 2005. Admission is free. The exhibit is located inside the Blue Cube at 34 Mason in San Francisco, CA. The show begins at 5 pm and wraps up at 10 pm. Cocktails, live performances, amazing art, and dancing await you. Hope to see you there!

So you can playing anything as long as it has a pop hit vocal over it? As song its a commerical pop hit, or rockist “underground” indy music.
It seems this music is more about promoting Vh-1 and Clear Channel properties (Madonna, Gwen, Missy, etc)
No wonder I hate mash-ups, Dangermouse, and electroclash so much…no imagination
Haven’t invotative DJs already been subtly sneaking in pop hooks, without pandering to the masses??
Give me Detroit/Chicago/Hague Berlin/Cologne over SF mash-ups any day…
You’re kidding me, right? There’s no one hovering over me telling me what I can and can’t play. The greatest reward for any DJ is a happy crowd — PERIOD. Mash-ups are perfect for a dancefloor as they have mass-appeal while at the same time a fresh originality. Think of the difference between an album version of a song and a remix. They are two different things for very different purposes…
CONTEXT is everything!
