Nine Inch Nails has made their latest single available for download in GarageBand format. However, for Windows users wanting to use the audio files, it’s a gigantic pain in the ass. As a service for Windows readers out there, I actually started writing up instructions on how to extract the SIT archive, mount the DMG file inside the archive, and extract the audio files. What a nightmare, though. It’s a serious pain in the ass and involves a number of commercial utilities to pull it off. Three hours later, I’ve officially given up on accessing the DMG HFS+ image on Windows XP. All is not lost, however, as I eventually found a torrent of the native audio files sans the Apple obfuscation.

You do know that the whole point of it being in the Garage band format, is that it can be edited?(in the Garage Band Application)…excerpt from release:
“Change the tempo. Add new loops. Chop up the vocals. Turn me into a woman. Replay the guitar. Anything you’d like,” said Reznor.”
Sure, absolutely. But no Mac = no GarageBand for me…
Indeed, so we can flip the audio into whatever we like and turn Trent into a tart any way we see fit…
fk apple.
(PS Thanks for the torrent link
Yeah, providing it as Garageband only was a strange idea – why not just provide high-quality wav’s and then everyone could use whatever audio app they want to remix it…
Even Sony just releases raw samples for their ACID remix contents. Go figure!
–Matt
surely Trent would have been cluey enough to do that – maybe he was “helped out” by Apple?
Can’t play GarageBand files?
ACID crashing all the time?
Do yourselves a favour – quit yer moaning and get a Mac.
Of course, I’ll just use that money I made from my last hit remix to buy one.
Shit, that’s right, I don’t have any hit remixes.
Okay, looks like I’m stuck with ACID.
I thought all Mac people swore by Pro Tools and Logic?
I haven’t had any trouble with ACID crashing. I don’t think I’d buy a Mac for Garageband either. I’d probably just go straight to Logic or something…
The link appears to be down. Pity. I actually have garageband and was hoping to see what the project looked like. I’d let the web admin at the nin site know that the link to the download is dead, but there’s no contact email mentioned on their site.
The point of Garageband format is so you can turn down the drum track, copy and paste the vocals, take out his bass track and add your own…whatever you want to do. Trent is a HUGE Mac fan and Garageband is a music mixing program that ships with EVERY Mac. So it sort of makes sense that he’d make it available to Mac users in a program that many would have access to.
If you’d like to hear what kinds of horrible things you can do to his song, take a listen to this moonshine-makin, toe-tappin, knee-slappin version I cooked up
http://www.subarusvx.com/HandThatFeeds(HeeHaw).mp3
Sure, and that’s exactly what you could do with any other audio program if he provided each individual part as a .wav or .aiff file. That way everyone could share the joy, and not just Garageband users.
Well Garageband was probably the choice cuz Trent works on Macs and porting stuff from Pro Tools to Garageband isn’t too daunting. And since GB is relatively cheap and non-pro, it’s the best suited for widespread editing.
And what person except an expert is going to have the time and talent to rhythm splice up a ton of raw WAV files? GarageBand (like Acid, yes) stores that for you. If you don’t know what that means, then be glad you don’t have to do it. BTW I hear it opens in Logic too.
Anyway, I had fun with it. http://www.level-design.net/THTF_1-2_AGM.mp3
I realize the PC users out there are disappointed, but the fact is, NIN use GarageBand to make their music and its easy for them to distribute it by just posting it on the Net.
I’ve been looking for a program like GarageBand on the PC, but nothing comes close, so I bought a Mac.
Somehow I doubt NIN use GarageBand to produce their album. It’s probably an “Export to …” option in Protools / Digital Performer / etc.
HE USES PRO TOOLS HD, BUT I BELIEVE HE STARTED WITH MIX 5 THOUGH. WITH ALL THE ACCESORIES OF COURSE. HE NARROWED THE NUMBER OF CHANNELS FOR THE SOLE PURPOSE OF CONVENIENCE, BUT THE MULTITRACK HAD WAY MORE TRACKS THAN THAT AND THEY DIDNT COME WITH DYNAMICS AND FX ALREADY PROCESSED INTO THEM. JUST ADMIT IT PC SUCKS ASS.
I’m just glad my caps lock key still works. Is that too much to ask for in a computer?
ACID can do it all – e.g. this track I made with ACID Pro 3:
http://tinyurl.com/7366e
That’s a cool little ditty. Have any more?
–Matt
Thanks -yes there’s more but none are quite as finished…
“HE USES PRO TOOLS HD”
This is what I use if I use Mac (on PC, Ableton Live), but thats at my college’s studio. Uncompressed 24bit/96kHz and absolutely no lower than 16bit/48kHz iin .AIFF or .WAV is the ONLY format I will use, period. Any “compressed” (and I don’t mean dynamics processors) format is pure crap. The only way to truly multi-track mix is to do it from a bunch of raw files or derive it from such if not laying down loops and MIDI tracks. For a 70MB file, it seems too dam small to be full length and have more than maybe a stereo track at 16/44.1 even if it were actually true uncompressed audio quality.
” WITH ALL THE ACCESORIES OF COURSE. HE NARROWED THE NUMBER OF CHANNELS FOR THE SOLE PURPOSE OF CONVENIENCE,”
And put it in an inconvienient format. Is there a way I can open and add the raw tracks to a Pro Tools HD session directly from the “import” function? I know there is for .AIFF and .WAV. as with all multi-track sequencing software.
BUT THE MULTITRACK HAD WAY MORE TRACKS THAN THAT AND THEY DIDNT COME WITH DYNAMICS AND FX ALREADY PROCESSED INTO THEM.
The FX should be on their own tracks so they can be panned in or out. The user is responsible for good use of dynamics. The only dynamics should be those used while in the recording session (to prevent digital clipping, moving away from mics, etc).
JUST ADMIT IT PC SUCKS ASS.”
And so does compressed audio
BTW I havnt seen the files bc I couldnt get them to either AIFF or WAV. Havnt tried them on the studio Pro Tools Mac yet.
In my opinion, the argument over which is better for music production- pc or mac- who cares?- it’s only as good as the person using it. You can make great music or complete utter shit with either platform- all it really comes down to is the creativity and skill of the person creating the sounds. In fact, looking at the commercial pop industry over the last ten years, you don’t even really need that either- just a monotonous Eminem-style bassline, some dodgy vocals, and deal out some blowjobs to the marketing department and you’re done! You’ve gotta admit, it worked for Britney and JLo! Nearly forgot- NIN use ProTools mainly.
I totally agree on the Mac vs. PC thing — use what you know and make the most of what you know, that’s my motto!
unhappy user garageband—what’s upi?! YOu too elitest to include the other half? I’m frustrated and i gotta a pc. please share your magic with me—
unhappy recording artist who has a pc in brooklyn, ny. otherwise known as manhattan.
I hope you all know that trent has released MULTIPLE formats for Only. Check out the website= http://www.nin.com/downloads/index.html
But i do think that it is pretty darn funny that he only released one song to be compatable with pc…hehe sorry pc users, you guys get ALOT of games, we get tracks to remix. hardly fair for us, but i will keep my mac anyways = )
ive been wanting a program like garage band for windows but haven’t found luck..know of any programs close to it?
How about ACID?
http://www.sonymediasoftware.com/products/acidfamily.asp
I downloaded the bittorrent file from above but it won’t open. If I rename it to .zip it says the archive is corrupt in my unzip program. Is there something else I need to do to open a bittorrent file?
I’m interested in using my Powerbook to create mash ups. I’m a TOTAL beginner. Today, I tried combining two mp3’s in Garageband, but I couldn’t find any way to adjust the tempo of one track to match the tempo of the other. Is there a better program for creating mash ups on the Mac? One that doesn’t require an engineering degree to understand, but still has time-stretching capabilities? It seems Acid Pro & Adobe Audition are only available for Windows and Mackie Tracktion seems pretty technical. Any advice for a newbie?
Hi, Brooke. I know a lot of people who are happy with Ableton Live on the Mac platform. Give that a try:
http://www.ableton.com
Good luck!
PC uses that want to make music, need to get;
FL Studio 6 XXL Producer Ed.
Sonar 5 or 6 Producer ED.
Project 5 V2
Sound Forge 8.0
Sony ACID Pro
….
If you want to create a “NIN” sound, start with the RXP plugin with FL Studio, and look for the “Thunder Kit” for your drums.
Also, look to get the Slayer 2 plugin for guitar.
You can also check out Cubase, but, you can also just find the VST / VSTi / DXi plugins for it, and use them through FL Studio, and Cakewalk products. Remember, good plugins are a key, at least on PC’s.
Don’t belive everything you have read here, yes Mac’s are preferred in the DAW world of music, however, with the right software, and pro, or near pro soundcards, you CAN make VERY good music, that once put to CD, noone would know the difference.
I have both a mac G4 and a pc i built soely for music production. i have been a DJ producer for more than 6 years and frankly i use my pc way more purely based on compatablility and cost. i have a delta 10/10 audio card that ties in with all my old analog equipment, and midi gear. IMO reason kicks the crap out of any mac based program for flexability couple that with acid pro and cubase and you have a virtual studio. the part i relly dislike about the mac is the fact that A: its a pain in the ass to get it hooked up with my studio (not enough ports) and the hardware to connect it is way over priced, and i havent even talked about the software yet lol… the only thing i use on the mac is ableton live for live remixing at gigs as well as i use it with final scratch. ya mac’s are great. but i can still build a PC just as good for half the cost.
Is there any way on gods green earth that Ican get the vocals in a wav. file? I use Reason and Samplitude to produce my music.. All I need is a acapella or just the vocals in wav. mp3 format.. HELP!

Tyler, drop me a line at mhite@hotmail.com and I’ll see if I can dig up the vocals. I might still have them.
