William Shatner Mash-Up Contest

17-Feb-05

ACIDplanet wants remixers to combine William Shatner’s Has Been and Ideal Woman for what is bound to be an oh-so-Shatneresque mash-up. The contest started Tuesday, February 15th and ends Friday, March 4th. Check it out!

Recycled in LA

Long time friend and fellow music aficionado Robtronik is putting together a bastard pop night in Santa Monica. Set to start Thursday, March 3rd, Recycled will feature resident DJs Meta and Kid Supreme. I expect a full report back from Beatmixed friends in Southern California!

Beatallica Receives Cease & Desist

17-Feb-05

Live mash-up band Beatallica received a cease & desist letter from Sony lawyers today demanding removal of lyrics and music from the site.  Quite a shame, as it is a hilarious gimmick they’ve got going on.

USB DJ Mixer

17-Feb-05

These new mixers from Numark are on the right track as far as I’m concerned.  Personally, though, I would love to see Rane integrate the Serato Scratch interface into their high-end mixers.  I am looking forward to the day when DJ mixer manufacturers and software manufacturers get together to create a standard, open interface and [...]

MP3 Is Not A Crime

Music for Rent

16-Feb-05

While the mainstream critics seem to be giving the thumb ups for the new Napster, members of the blog community are poo-pooing the music-rental model.  Others have taken matters into their own hands, devising clever circumvention methods to save unprotected copies of their Napster rented music.  As a DJ and music geek, I think DRM [...]

Sad Musical Sales Facts

11-Feb-05

Sad Fact: The Scissor Sisters have sold nearly 1,600,000 copies of their album in the UK alone.  In contrast, the album has sold just over 150,000 copies in the US.  I just saw the band play a few weeks ago in San Francisco and it was an absolutely amazing show.  I guess their seemingly instant [...]

RoboDJ

11-Feb-05

How crazy is this RoboDJ contraption?  Now if there only were some method of transcribing scratch movements into MIDI, we’d have the makes of robo-turntablist on our hands.  (There is actually proposed "notation" in Stephen Webber’s Turntable Technique book.)

Lionel Vinyl, aka FakeID, does Bootie

11-Feb-05

Attention San Francisco bay area residents: tomorrow night, Saturday, February 12th, Bootie will host producer and DJ extraordinaire Lionel Vinyl for what is guaranteed to be an amazing night of bastard pop bliss.  One of my favorite local DJs, Jay-R, will also be performing in the back room — making it twice the incentive to [...]
