The mash-up police

17-Nov-04

Waxy.org and Boing Boing are reporting that the mash-up police are out in full-force, sending cease-and-desist letters to web sites linking to the Kleptones album.  Who are these mash-up police you ask?  None other than Walt Disney, the company which holds the rights to Queen’s music and trademarks.  Just protecting their assets, right?

Ableton warping tutorial

16-Nov-04

Thanks to Adrian from Bootie for tipping me off to this great Ableton Live “warping” tutorial. If you use Ableton and find yourself dealing with long segments of audio containing bad edits or sloppy drummers, then this is definitely a must read for you.

Grey Video

16-Nov-04

Danger Mouse takes it one step further with The Grey Video.  Cute idea.

Music for the bootleg generation

13-Nov-04

Music Biz News has a short blurb on the Music for the Bootleg Generation mash-up album. Interesting to see more mainstream press taking notice.

This month’s guest is Santa Cruz’s DJ Tripp who has quite the discography of [...]

CC Mixter beta

12-Nov-04

Great collection of Bush remixes

12-Nov-04

I stumbled across a great webjay page with a number of amazing Bush remixes this morning.  Enjoy!

Viewer reaction to MTV’s Ultimate Mash-ups

12-Nov-04

There’s a bit of buzz going on about the new MTV show Ultimate Mash-ups — mostly positive.  One man calls it a "quasi fuck you to [the] RIAA"  while another viewer was relieved to find it wasn’t another "crappy reality shows about 20 year olds who can’t help but throw tantrums."  I’m still convinced they [...]

Remix Era

09-Nov-04

Slate is running a great article on the rise of the remix, tracing its origins back to Depeche Mode and discotheques of yesteryear.

Move over Technics — make room for Volkswagon

08-Nov-04

This is quite possibly the most absurd and undeniably unique portable record player I’ve ever seen. The web site seems to suggest that it can be used to preview records while shopping at second-hand stores, but I suspect that running a mini-VW camper van over a record isn’t considered appropriate handling — even in a [...]
