Thanks to Party Ben for forwarding this press release on to me. This is great news for the San Francisco bay area …
LIVE 105, the first major commercial station in the country to recognize the international music phenomenon known as “mash-ups” or “bootlegs” has taken another step forward by creating an entire playlist category for mash-ups in regular rotation. Mash-ups playlisted initially include:
- Radiohead vs. John Lennon - “Karma Life,” Blondie vs. The Doors “Rapture Riders,” & David Bowie vs. David Bowie “Rebel Never Gets Old,” by British producer Go Home Productions
- Franz Ferdinand vs. Beastie Boys - “Franzie Boys,” by Scottish producer McSleazy
- Beastie Boys vs. Herbie Hancock + AC/DC + INXS - “Intergalactic Rockit,” by Belgian duo 2 many djs (Soulwax)
- Linkin Park vs. Britney Spears - “Faint Britney,” by British producer NowMash
- Dandy Warhols vs. Beastie Boys - “Intergalactic Friends,” by British producer Ultra 396
- Led Zeppelin vs. Beastie Boys - “The Immigrant Check” by San Francisco bootlegger Nemozob
- U2 vs. Lyrics Born - “Callin’ on Sunday,” David Bowie vs. Hot Hot Heat “Let’s Dance With Me,” & Incubus vs. No Doubt + DEVO - “Hella Freedom Maniac,” by LIVE 105’s own Party Ben
LIVE 105 led the way in American radio acceptance of bootleg mixes with their playlisting of the Inhumanz mix of Nine Inch Nails’ “Closer” with 50 Cent’s “In Da Club” and Party Ben’s techno mix of Eminem’s “Without Me” back in 2002. In May, 2003, LIVE 105 debuted “The Sixx Mixx,” a weekly half-hour mix show dedicated to mash-ups, remixes, and wacky surprises. Produced by LIVE 105 Creative Director “Party” Ben Gill, the show airs at 6pm Fridays, and is known to cause great excitement among Bay Area commuters. “When people hear something unexpected, like Michael Jackson over Nirvana, the phones light up,” says Gill. “The reaction has been incredible.” The show is currently rated #4 among Persons 18-34, a considerable gain since its inception.
LIVE 105 has also had great success with mash-ups on the Saturday night electronic music show “Subsonic,” hosted by LIVE 105 Music Director Aaron Axelsen. “Mash-ups bring new excitement to the playlist while retaining familiarity,” says Axelsen. “It adds unique and compelling stationality to the LIVE 105 arsenal.”
While the bootleg phenomenon is generally acknowledged to have begun in England with producers like The Freelance Hellraiser, the San Francisco Bay Area is home to a burgeoning scene, with an all-mashup nightclub and many local producers and remixers. “Just like LIVE 105 supports the local music scene, we’re proud to give new local art form airplay,” says Program Director Sean Demery. “The preponderance of inexpensive music software means the next great remix could come from anywhere…it’s our job to pay attention.”

Indie 103.1 in Los Angeles has had mash-ups in rotation for the past couple months now. I’ve heard GHP’s “Karma In The Life” on the radio way too many times to not call it “regular rotation”. I know I’ve heard others, but I can’t think of the titles of any of them offhand.
[Also, it should be noted that Indie 103.1's lunchtime DJ Steve Jones [Of Sex Pistols fame] plays mashups all the damned time.]
BTW — this bit of news also is being run on MTV’s web site:

Congrats, Party Ben!
Party Ben, rules!
Love,
Mom
We are all so proud of you Ben!!
Love ya!!

Regarding the Indie 103.1 comment….Live 105’s release says: first major commercial station. “Indie” 103.1 implies independent..or non-commercial. Also, Ben has played mash-ups in his show for almost 2 years. Steve Jones may throw some into his show, but thats not “regular” rotation. For the record, there have been at least 2 mash-ups in regular rotation at Live 105 in the last year, before they added the genre as a whole. (NIN vs 50 Cent and A Hidden Forrest were in rotation many months ago)
Hey there…just wanted to update you all on the mashup situation at Indie 103.1 FM
here in Los Angeles.
They’ve put me in charge of a new feature called “Mashup Of The Day”, which is a new mashup that airs 4 times daily during the week: 7am, 11am, 4pm, 9pm - altho, they sometimes bump the spin at their own will
Anyway, I voice the intro and outro to each track, and give some quick info on the masher at the end. They’ve kept me fairly strict to mashups that feature indie/alternative artists in the mix (thus, all those Beyonce/Missy/Britney tracks don’t get much of a shot. But I did get
GHP’s “Ray Of Gob” on the air…woo hoo!)
It’s baby steps right now…but my ultimate goal is something similar to Party Ben’s “SixxMixx” or a full-fledged show dedicated to beatmixng mashups and bootleg remixes.
They’re online at - http://www.indie1031.fm
Any questions or comments, email me…ciao, Paul
I am really happy to report, that after
getting Party Ben’s amazing “Blvd. Of Broken Songs” in on “Mashup Of The Day,” Indie 103.1 has now added it into regular rotation (spinning about 6 times a day). And it’s getting a ton of phone calls and great feedback.
This track is exploding all over the place!
Bravo, Party Ben!
Hey DJ Paul V.
I have heard the mashup of the day many times on Indie 103.1 now. Very cool to be hearing you throw down mashups in L.A. for us. (I’m sure Kroq will follow suit any day now)
I was hoping I could get you to check out my project “Fleetwood Mash” at http://www.FleetwoodMash.com
It is a mash-up Supergroup, a virtual band, if you will. maybe you could rock one of the tracks someday. Also, my site is a great sourse for new mashups coming out, would be a good resource for you. Go to the ‘Download Other Artists Music” link.
Cheers, tell me what you think.
MG Kelly
Yo…can you buy any of these mashups anywhere?
