The Houston Press is running a piece on Final Scratch. I haven’t used it myself, but it definitely looks cool. I don’t think it would be very practical to set up in the middle of a gig, though! This is a great start, but the Final Scratch folks need to focus on better integration scenarios. [...]
Hired to DJ a Father’s Day bash at Vegas’ Sin City nightclub, former Motley Crew drummer Tommy Lee was escorted out in mid-set due to his “seriously weak deejaying work.” I’ve wanted to escort out a few DJs myself! I’ll have to start a mutiny next time a nightclub DJ gets on my nerves.
This is too funny not to pass on. Adrian from Bootie writes: … I just had to forward this article from Vice magazine to every single DJ I know, which is starting to turn into a SHITLOAD of people. (Web designers are to 1998 what DJs are to 2004. Discuss.) Read it, and don’t bother [...]
Slurry Magazine is running a very short article on the history and origin of mash-up. It also happens to be written by mash-up artists Soundhog and Manriki. Worth a quick read!
If you don’t know about Osymyso, you’re missing out. He’s definitely on par with 2 Many DJs and is certainly one of the best mash-up artists I’ve ever heard. As one poster comments, “Someone alert the RIAA. That 10 minutes has more copyright infringements than an hour spent on Kazaa.” Intro-inspection Fiver to Bigwig Pat [...]
My second attempt at a mash-up, this time with two of my all-time favorite 80s tunes — Rick Springfield vs. Prince: When Jessie Cries. Please let me know what you think!
I’ve stumbled upon what is probably the authoritative list of coolest song parts, complete with running commentary and audio samples. Retrocrush explains: From the openings strains of Heart’s “Barracuda” to the end of The Doors’ “The End”, sometimes there are pieces of songs that are cooler than the song itself. After sifting through hundreds of [...]
As reported by MTV News: An 18-year-old Californian has won David Bowie’s Mash Up Remix Contest. David Choi was selected from thousands of entries by a panel of judges that included Bowie himself for his remix “Big Shaken Car,” a creative hybrid of “She’ll Drive the Big Car,” from Bowie’s 2003 album, Reality, and “Shake [...]
This is terrible — pay for play is illegal, except when it’s an advertisement! (source: Slashdot)
Playfair disappeared for a while and has returned under the name Hymn. Strip the DRM restrictions on your iTunes purchases and cast off your RIAA / WIPO / DMCA shackles. From the FAQ: I wrote hymn because I, on principal, disagree with DRM. Although I clicked “accept” when presented with Apple Computer’s license agreement for [...]
