Remove AAC encryption from iTunes files

The Playfair project claims to “decode Apple iTunes Music Store protected AAC files into unprotected AAC files so that they can be played outside of iTunes.” Has anyone tried it yet?

  1. Looks like Slashdot picked this up, too.

  2. I tried to copy an Itunes wave file with Audacity so that I can shorten it for use with my chorus (Iteach middle school music). I got an “encrypted audio file” message that recommended I convert the file. What does that mean and how do I do that?

  3. Hi, Louie. Most songs purchased from the iTunes Store are protected, meaning they severely restrict what you can do with the audio. (The exception is an “iTunes Plus” file.) Your best bet it to use iTunes to burn it to CD and then rip it back into iTunes as a .WAV file. Once it is in .WAV format, you can open it in Audacity for editing.

    Good luck,
