Mash-ups and the majors

Like sister Kylie’s New Order mash-up (on the Love at First Sight single), Dannii takes note and releases one built atop Madonna’s “Into the Groove.” Billboard reports:

“Don’t Wanna Lose This Feeling” is the follow-up to Dannii Minogue’s dance smash, “I Begin to Wonder,” which reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot Dance Radio Airplay chart in November. The track is a catchy, fun thumpy-funk club romp, complete with a springy bassline. Of special note is an alternate version of the cut, titled “Don’t Wanna Lose This Groove.” This version is an officially sanctioned “mash-up,” placing Minogue’s vocals atop the music of Madonna’s seminal 1985 hit “Into the Groove.” “Don’t Wanna Lose This Groove” works marvelously and could spark instant curiosity.

Also, appearing on the Queer Eye for the Straight Guy soundtrack is a major label sanctioned bootleg titled “Everybody Wants You To Emerge,” based upon Fischerspooner and Billy Squier. It’s interesting to see that more and more labels have realized that people like bootlegs and that there is actually a paying market for them. It will also be interesting to see what other mainstream/major label artists release their own in 2004. Danger Mouse brought mainstream attention to the artform, so I fully expect that labels will use this publicity to their benefit and start releasing their own material.
