Dsico fuses styles in his ‘bastard pop’

A great feature on Luke Collison, aka Dsico, appears in the Daily Trojan, the University of Southern California’s student newspaper. Dsico thinks trance and house music sucks, in particular anything released as a Ministry of Sound DJ mix CD:

Dsico’s inspiration for putting the Spasticated records release “Ministry of S—” (now the subject of some legal action) came from a simple reason — “I hate those DJ mix discs.”
Although Dsico’s music is also meant to get people dancing, he sees the repetitive, simplistic style of trance and house music as lacking creativity and monopolizing media attention better-suited to more creative artists.

I don’t necessarily agree that it lacks creativity, but a lot of it sure is junk. I’ve always viewed bootlegs and mash-ups as a sort of rebellion against the mostly crap music the majors pump out. Bootlegs fill a musical void — but do so in a very ironic manner, often times re-appropriating what was mediocre and turning it into something brilliant.

Dsico is right on the money. Those Ministry of Sounds CD’s are completely pointless – they might as well just release the same disc each year and give some different cover art. No-one would know the difference.
