Opsound

Opsound is an experimental record label and it sounds like a great idea. It’s based upon a collaborative, distributed, open culture of sharing material. Here’s an explanation from their web site:

Musicians and sound artists are invited to release any material they wish under a copyleft license (in this case the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike license) into the Opsound open pool. Each artist will have a page on the Opsound site which will include links to artists soundfiles (hosted elsewhere).

Everyone is encouraged to use and play with this material, remixing, reconstructing, combining and recombining it, and these new sound files can be added to the open pool as well.

In addition to the open pool, Opsound will host user-created microlabels, where anyone can develop & release online eps & albums using material from the sound pool. The microlabels will also be free to operate like traditional labels, selling & distributing cd-rs, cds, records, or even casette tapes in the physical world. [note: the microlabel section of the Opsound site will be activated when a reasonable amount of material has been collected into the sound pool.]

Opsound will also be releasing cds & records derived from the open pool on the Opsound house label.
